HyperOS 3.1 Features: What’s New?

Before we dive into the list of the eligible devices, let’s have a look at what new things will come with the Hyper OS 3.1 eligible devices

  1. Enhanced Super Island: Xiaomi introduced the Super Island in HyperOS 3, a pill-shaped cutout similar to Dynamic Island on iOS. With the HyperOS 3.1 update, it now supports live updates in third-party apps like music, reminders, and timers.
  2. Smoother Animations: Another noticeable change is the improved animations in system apps. Apps such as Gallery and Weather feel more fluid and smoother, bringing them in line with iOS.
  3. Super OTA: Xiaomi has added a new update mechanism that reduces the installation time and number of system reboots.
  4. iOS-Inspired Recents Menu: Tired of those stacks like recents windows? HyperOS 3.1 brings an iOS style horizontal card
  5. New Lockscreen Effects: HyperOS 3.1 expands on the lockscreen customization on eligible devices. You get new depth effects and improved widgets on the lockscreen.
  6. AirPods Support: We got AirPods support on Android before GTA 6. With HyperOS 3.1, you get native support for AirPods. This means a pop-up will appear each time you pair your AirPods. Surprisingly, there’s also Spatial Audio support, which is exclusive to Apple products
  7. Answer calls on your iPhone: Xiaomi is not just copying Apple; it’s also offering interoperability with its devices. With HyperOS 3.1, you can answer calls on your iPhone directly from your Xiaomi phone.
  8. More Accessibility Settings and Password App: HyperOS 3.1 adds a new Assistant that provides quicker access to accessibility features like Active Visual Perception. There’s also a new Password app that saves your passkey, passwords, and Wi-Fi passwords.
  9. Quick Gestures and Less Motion Sickness: You also get Quick Gestures for navigation and shortcuts on specific phones. And if you are feeling motion sick due to those slick animations, you can toggle the Motion Sickness Reduction option.
  10. Improved HyperConnect: The HyperOS 3.1 update also improves Xiaomi’s HyperConnect file system with lower latency, faster file transfer and better multi device connectivity

HyperOS 4.0 Update

After rolling out HyperOS 3.1, Xiaomi is working on the HyperOS 4.0 update. It is based on Android 17, and the company is set to release it soon. The company is expected to start beta testing the software soon, and it’s likely to release globally with the Xiaomi 18 series.

Tipster Digital Chat Station has revealed that it will have Liquid Glass design, a major upgrade for Xiaomi’s decade old operating system. Since Xiaomi’s skin largerly mirrors Apple’s UI. Xiaomi also plans to replace the underlying framework to eliminate legacy elements from MIUI. It will be replaced by a native in house solution. According to reports, Xiaomi wants to remove MIUI elements from system apps like Weather and Photo Album. This should improve the performance and smoothness across Xiaomi devices.

A rather interesting leak is that Xiaomi’s partnership with Leica will go beyond just cameras. You will see the Leica’s color palette even in the company’s UI. Given that Leica branded lens are only available in flagship phones, you can expect the same for HyperOS 4.0 when it arrives.

Given Xiaomi’s past track record, we can expect the HyperOS 4.0 update to release later this year. It will release on flagships like the Xiaomi 17 series first followed by Redmi and Poco devices. This will be a phased rollout and it might be quite some time before you actually get the update.
